Encryption And Passwords

PASSWORDS

Backup Manager provides a dual process to protect our subscribers' account and data. The first step is the subscriber-chosen password, which is 6-10 characters long. This unique password must be used to open or access your account. However, this password and/or your user name will not allow unencryption of your data. Treat your password just as you do a key to unlock your building. Do not share or give out your password to any unauthorized individual.

Step two is the encryption key itself. The encryption key is also a password between 6 and 10 characters long. This unique password is the key to unlock the encryption code software. Without your exact encryption key, no data can be rendered into a readable format. This feature is your guarantee that only you will ever be able to unencrypt data restored from the Backup Manager Data Center.

HOW SECURE IS ENCRYPTION?

When Backup Manager encrypts your data, a mathematical algorithm is activated. This encryption process scrambles data into an illegible state. Only your unique encryption key can unlock the encryption software that will reconstruct your data. No person, software program, computer or even Backup Manager can unencrypt your data without this encryption key.

As a result, you must never lose your encryption key! Record your key and store it in a secure location, as without it, you cannot restore your data. Should you realize that your encryption key is lost or forgotten, you should activate a new account and proceed with a new full system backup.

EXPORTING ENCRYPTED DATA

It may be illegal, in your country, to export information electronically or by any other medium, which utilizes an encryption algorithm greater than 32 bit. (Backup Manager uses 128 bit encryption)

Backup Manager provides a service that legally falls within the guidelines set forth by the United States and Canadian governments. The movement of 32 and 128 bit encrypted data across and within the borders of Canada and the United States is permitted.

As it may be illegal to export, either electronically or on other mediums, encrypted information within your government's jurisdiction, it is your responsibility to ensure that you follow the guidelines set forth by your country's governing body.

Read the Software licensing agreement -- specifically the paragraph associated with the exporting of encrypted data. Familiarize yourself with your country's governing laws as pertains to encrypted information.
